Frequently Asked Questions

About my approach & services

What is Gestalt therapy?

Gestalt therapy is a humanistic approach that focuses on the present moment and your awareness of yourself, others, and your environment. Rather than solely focussing on the past or stories, we explore what's happening for you now - your feelings, patterns, and relationships - helping you develop greater self-awareness and make meaningful changes.

What is LGBTQ+ affirming therapy?

LGBTQ+ affirming therapy means I work from a foundation of understanding and respect for diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions. You won't need to explain basic LGBTQ+ concepts or defend your identity. Instead, we can focus on what brought you to therapy - whether that's related to your identity, relationships, mental health, or life transitions.

Do I need to be LGBTQ+ to see you?

No, I work with all clients. While I specialize in LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, I welcome anyone seeking support with life challenges, relationships, or personal growth.

What issues do you help with?

I work with a range of concerns including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, identity exploration, trauma, life transitions, self-esteem, and general emotional wellbeing. If you're unsure whether I can help, please get in touch for a chat.

Do you work with couples or just individuals?

At the moment I only work with individuals.

Getting started & booking

How do I book my first session?

Get in touch via the contact form or email me at mdf1jz [@] protonmail.com. We'll have a free introductory 15-minute call to talk about what's happening for you, what you're looking for, and explore availability to find a time to meet for an initial appointment.

What happens in the first session?

Prior to the first session I'll send you a simple form covering some basic information, any previous counselling experience, and brief background details. We'll discuss anything from this form in our first session. This initial meeting is to get a sense of how we might work together. I suggest you take a couple of days afterward to reflect on whether you'd like to continue. We would then have approximately 4 sessions to explore what working together might look like, before deciding on the number of sessions that would be helpful for you.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies depending on your needs and goals. Most clients attend 6-12 sessions initially, though some clients continue with long-term work. We'll regularly review your progress together and you're always in control of how long you'd like to continue.

Practical information

Do you offer online counselling or only in-person?

I offer sessions both in-person and online, giving you flexibility to choose what works best for you.

Where are you located?

I have therapy rooms in Kings Cross (London NW1), Wimbledon ( London SW19), and Croydon. Both locations are easily accessible by public transport.

Can I switch to online sessions if I move away?

Yes, you can switch between in-person and online sessions as your circumstances change.

How long is each session?

Each session is 50 minutes and we typically meet weekly, though we can discuss a schedule that works for you.

What are your fees?

Please see my Fees & Booking page for current pricing and payment information.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Please provide at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations may be charged. We can discuss my full cancellation policy during our initial call.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes, everything we discuss is strictly confidential. The only exceptions are if there's a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, or if required by law. I'll always discuss these boundaries with you at the start of our work together.

What's the difference between counselling and therapy?

In practice, the terms are often used interchangeably and there's significant overlap. Both involve a trained professional helping you explore difficulties and make positive changes. I use the term "counselling" but the work I do is also considered therapy.
